The White Black Girl

Tanae
Wofford College
January 2013

She had brown eyes and a country twang.
But no one liked it. She had to do her own thang.
Her voice didn’t match the color of her skin
But her mama and daddy always taught her, “Baby, you don’t have to fit in”
She’d come home crying with waterfalls down her cheeks
She’d say mama & daddy; I hate the way I speak.
But as the years grew and so did her twang
She remembered her grandmother’s voice saying “do yo own thang”
She made a promise to never give up
And from then on she held her head up.
