A dark old wizened face smiles out at me with his dark eyes through Coke bottle thick glasses, a laugh ringing out between yellow teeth as we watch the evening news. I ask him what he thinks about immigration. Like the man on the television is talking about and he says in his clear southern tone “Channa, people is people no matter where they live. People is just tryin to get by an feed their families.” I recalled this image in the faces of the migrant workers, tired, worked to the bone and think of what he might have said and how he might have answered their questions and of what his response would be to “what do I do next?”
